Earthing Checks

A safe home starts with proper earthing — and yet, it’s one of the most overlooked parts of residential electrical safety. Good earthing protects you, your appliances, and your property by safely carrying fault current away when something goes wrong. If your earthing is damaged, missing, or outdated, you could be at serious risk without even knowing it.

Why check your earthing?

Over time, earth connections can corrode, break, or loosen. In older homes especially, earthing systems might not meet modern standards — or may have never been installed properly in the first place. Without a solid earth connection, safety switches (RCDs) may not trip fast enough during a fault, increasing the risk of electric shock or fire.

Getting your earthing checked means:

  • Your home is safer for you and your family
  • RCDs and circuit breakers function as they should
  • Fault currents are carried away from metal surfaces
  • Your appliances are better protected from surges
  • You comply with current NZ electrical safety regulations

When should you have your earthing checked?

You should definitely consider an earthing check if:

  • Your home is more than 20 years old and hasn’t been inspected
  • You’re planning to install a new switchboard or RCDs
  • You’ve experienced shocks from taps or appliances
  • You’re noticing flickering lights or tripping breakers
  • You’ve recently had major plumbing or electrical work done

Even if everything appears to be working fine, a compromised earth might not show itself until there’s a serious fault.

My approach

I carry out a full inspection of your home’s earthing system — from the earth stake to the main switchboard and water pipe bonding. I’ll check for proper connections, measure earth resistance, and make sure your system is compliant, safe, and ready to handle fault conditions. If there’s an issue, I’ll explain clearly what’s wrong and what’s needed to put it right.

What to expect

An earthing check usually includes:

Inspecting the main earth connection and conductor

  • Testing the earth stake (if present) for resistance and continuity
  • Verifying bonding to metal pipework and other services
  • Checking all terminations at the switchboard
  • Replacing or upgrading earth stakes or conductors if needed

If your earthing system isn’t up to standard, I’ll provide a clear plan to bring it up to scratch — with no unnecessary extras.
